We have five locations throughout the Monterey Peninsula, and our shops offer the best locations to start your kayaking or biking adventures from because we are in the heart of the action! Our Story
Adventures by the Sea began as exactly that — a love of the Monterey Peninsula and the outdoors. The company was founded in 1987 by the Knight family, who grew it into a Monterey institution over the next three decades. It started small: Frank Knight loaded six bikes onto the back of a flatbed truck and delivered them around the peninsula so visitors could experience the beautiful Monterey coastline on two wheels.
From those six bikes, the business grew. Bike rentals evolved into guided bike tours, and the original Lovers Point location in Pacific Grove opened with kayaking, surrey rentals, stand-up paddleboarding, and beach activities. The flagship 299 Cannery Row location followed, joined over time by four more shops — downtown Monterey, two additional Cannery Row locations, and Stillwater Cove in Pebble Beach.
A New Chapter (2018)
In 2018, the business was sold to Kyle and Liz Wareham. The Warehams have lived on the Monterey Peninsula since 2006 and share a deep love for the outdoors. Both spent over a decade in the hospitality industry with Pebble Beach Resorts, where they got to know the Knight family well over the years.
Electric Bikes and the Family Super Center
With the Warehams’ continued enthusiasm for outdoor adventure, electric bikes were added to the fleet and instantly became one of the most sought-after activities — allowing riders of every ability level to experience the fabled Monterey coastline. In the fall of 2021, Adventures by the Sea expanded again with the opening of its Family Super Center at Steinbeck Plaza in the heart of Cannery Row — poised to be one of the most family-friendly rental locations on the peninsula for decades to come.
Community and Conservation
Kyle and Liz are active in community affairs and in the ecological preservation of the Monterey Bay area. Both are avid paddleboarders and cyclists, and they enjoy camping with their daughter, Harper.
